Hurtwood

Our Story

Hurtwood began publishing books on the fine and graphic arts in 1978. We are an independent publisher of beautiful books, produced in collaboration with authors, artists, major institutions and collections.

We push the boundaries in a book’s concept, design and construction. A thoughtful company in every sense of the word, we consider the significance of books in our culture and challenge how we envision and interact with them. We build close and lasting relationships with our artists and authors to ensure our books fulfil and embody their vision.

We took our name from the ancient woodland the Hurtwood in the Surrey Hills and we care deeply about sustainability, building each book to last for generations. We pride ourselves on the high level of care we put into our work; whether a booklet or a special edition volume, each is treated the same. We are passionate about artists, art and books, and our fervour is evident in our work.

Hurtwood began publishing books on the fine and graphic arts in 1978. In the 1980s, we moved away from direct publishing, becoming a book atelier for international clients in the arts. After a three-decade hiatus, we have happily circled back to our roots in publishing.

We welcome new proposals from writers, scholars, artists, museums and galleries.

We commission and create what is timeless and timely, irreverent and ambitious.

We collaborate with some of the most innovative artistic institutions and individuals.

  • “These are beautiful drawings, and the book (Pia’s World) is a beautiful gift from a mother to a daughter.”

    Tracey Emin

  • “The books are amazing, and I can’t thank you enough for your patience, dedication, and faith in the project. It’s incredible to see the books in the flesh; they truly exceed what I thought was possible.”

    Walead Beshty, Artist

  • “There’s such a love for detail. It has been an enormous pleasure working with Hurtwood.”

    Emily Patrick, Artist

  • “The client was thrilled, the designer (me) was astonished and relieved, and the whole process was a pleasure (and fun) from start to finish.”

    Andrew Barron, Designer

  • “With this artist’s book, the legendary museum director Julia Peyton-Jones returns to her origins as an artist. These wonderful drawings are the first public manifestations of her return to the studio and an art career that started in the late 1970s with paintings, film and performances. Charting her everyday life with her daughter in words and images, this inspiring book is first and foremost a story about happiness.”

Hans Ulrich Obrist, Artistic Director, Serpentine Galleries
